Survey Crew Chief (Rail Specialist)

Our dynamic Geomatics team is looking for a Survey Crew Chief with expertise in precision monitoring and rail surveying in Mississauga, ON. As the successful candidate you are organized and highly collaborative, detailed oriented, and possess strong communication skills. You have a strong ability to operate equipment and field tools, with a healthy respect for the great outdoors and the timeline of the task at hand.

What you will do:

  • Manage and perform field survey work with the support of Survey Assistants.
  • Liaise with Project Managers to coordinate and complete field survey work in accordance with the project budgets, schedules, priorities, and survey methodology.
  • Establish geodetic project control networks to the highest industry standards and in accordance with municipal, provincial, and federal standards when applicable.
  • Perform precision monitoring of structures, including buildings, roads, bridges, and railways, to ensure stability and detect any changes or movement.
  • Conduct surveys of infrastructure to determine position, alignment, and other necessary information for construction and/or maintenance related to transportation projects. 
  • Liaise with client field representatives and landowners and be a brand ambassador for GeoVerra.
  • Prepare neat field notes, sketches, checklists, and digital data in required formats for different audiences.
  • Provide guidance, training and mentorship to Survey Assistants.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of industry best practices, efficient field processes and procedures and the innovative use of new technology. 
  • Proactively participate in and support the GeoVerra safety program.
  • Complete office technical survey tasks as required and other duties as assigned.

What you will bring:

  • Diploma/Degree in a post-secondary program related to surveying and geomatics or an equivalent experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of survey equipment and software such as total stations, digital levels, and static, rapid-static, and real-time network GNSS.
  • Experience using 0.5”/1” robotic total stations with sets of angles methodology is an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of precision monitoring techniques, including monitoring systems, instrumentation, monitoring-specific targets, data analysis, and reporting.
  • Demonstrated experience in railway surveying, including track alignment, topographic surveys, and construction layout.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in land surveying, with a focus on precision monitoring and railway surveys.
  • Experience of Trimble equipment and software, laser scanning and line locating considered an asset.
  • Strong problem-solving skills in a field environment.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with the capacity to produce accurate and legible field notes.
  • The ability to develop and motivate survey staff and work well in a team environment.
  • An aptitude for delivering projects on time and budget.
  • A valid driver’s license and can provide a clean driver’s abstract; and
  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug and alcohol screening as per the limits provided in the Canadian Model for Providing a Safe Workplace

Job Conditions:

  • Ability to carry, lift and push 50lbs on a regular basis.
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions.
  • Possible shift work and the ability to travel out of town may be required.
